My Favorite Independent Games
If you had asked me a year ago what games I liked, I would most likely mention only Triple-A games. These are the games you see commercials for on television, on the ad bar of a website, or even on a bus. Halo, Call of Duty/Modern Warfare, and Grand Theft Auto are examples of Triple-A games. They are generally very good. To a non-gamer, these are the only games. To someone in the know these are simply the blockbusters that you can talk to anyone about. There are many, many games besides these that come out every year. Independent games (Indie games) can give players much richer experiences despite their lower production values. In this post I am going to go over a few Indie games in my collection that I enjoy.
Limbo
Limbo is a perfect example of a terrific, short game. It takes less than 2 hours to complete, but the world is beautiful and the feelings of curiosity and fear I experienced were very real. Limbo does a terrific job of immersing the player and making them feel for the character in the same amount of time it takes to watch a feature film. I have played through it twice, and I will play through it again.
Antichamber
I occasionally like a good puzzle. Antichamber is a puzzle maze. As you move through the maze you see signs on the wall giving hints and making interesting observations about the puzzles you just worked through. These puzzles boggle the mind similar to the first game in the Portal series. My first play-through took about seven hours. Solving the puzzles and exploring this game is super fun. At some point when I have another many hours I will go back and find 100% of the signs. I may also attempt the five-minute speed run. You can beat the game in hours or minutes. Everyone needs something to tease their brain, and this game is very, very good at that.
The Binding of Isaac
This game is a little messed up. It is a dungeon crawler with a very dark sense of humor. The details of the content may turn some people off of the game, and those people are missing out. For a few months this game was all I ever saw my roommate play. How do you play the same game for months? The game changes every time you play it! The bosses change, the dungeon layouts change, and the power-ups change. You can unlock new characters to play as that are slightly different. You don't play the same game over and over...you play a new game every time!
More!
As I wrote earlier, there are many many Indie Games. I encourage you to give a few a try.
